A little about me…
My name is Sarah Griffin — my friends call me Griffy.
I’m just a friendly Southern girl living in NYC. I miss the North Carolina mountains, cornbread and good sweet tea, but I adore living in New York. I spend most of my time working with kids as a school counselor; harnessing the power of play and laughter to heal children and adults.
I use evidence-based practices in my day job, but when I come home, I let myself delve into the gray area between science and spirituality. They’ve always felt very close to me, just a thin line separating what can be proven scientifically and what we feel instinctually. I feel as Henry Miller did,
“What I want is to open up. I want to know what's inside me. I want everybody to open up. I'm like an idiot with a can opener in his hand, wondering where to begin-- to open up the earth. I know that underneath the mess everything is marvelous. I'm sure of it.”
That deep curiosity and sense of wonder allows me to sit in practice with you as a tarot reader and a modern-day witch. Now let’s crack this world open and see what we find.
My spiritual journey…
From Irish Catholic to Chaos Magician
From the beginning, I have always been drawn to spirituality, magic, and the unknown; determined to uncover all the truth and wonder this existence has to offer.
As a young person, I explored magic through the religion of my family — Catholicism. But I quickly began to feel constrained by the worldview presented to me at mass. My Sunday school teachers were horrified when ten year-old Sarah asked the priest why women can’t be priests (he didn’t have an answer). I tried to stuff it down, but my dissatisfaction with man’s explanations of god only grew. Fourteen year-old Sarah exchanged sidelong glances with her peers during youth group when our leaders tried to explain why being gay was a sin. I didn’t buy it. Something was rotten.
As I became disillusioned with Catholicism, I started to return to the places where I had felt deep awe and magic as a child — books, poetry, friendship, music, psychology, art, divination, and nature. I explored the universe using psychedelics. I visited Ireland and learned about the myths and beliefs of my pagan ancestors.
For a long time, I have experimented with magic on my own, focusing on myself and my own spiritual healing. Now I’m finally ready to share my skills with others. Let’s explore the magic and mystery of this universe together.
